The Chicago Bears have been connected to several defensive players ahead of the NFL trade deadline, with Khalil Mack emerging as a familiar name. However, the team's biggest need might be in the secondary rather than along the defensive line.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that Chicago has been linked to pass rushers such as Mack, but multiple league evaluators believe cornerback is becoming a bigger priority. Jaylon Johnson and Tyrique Stevenson have had their ups and downs this season, while rookie Malik Muhammad has shown flashes but is still developing.
The Bears have reasons to explore the cornerback market, especially with several potential options circulating around the league. Fowler reported that Washington Commanders cornerback Mike Sainristil has been discussed as a name to monitor. However, he does not get the sense Washington plans to trade him.
Another possibility could be Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Riq Woolen. Fowler suggested that an available cornerback such as Woolen could make sense for Chicago in exchange for a Day 3 draft pick. That type of move would give the Bears another option in the secondary without requiring the draft capital typically associated with a major trade.
Of course, the Mack connection is still worth monitoring. The former Bears star would give Chicago another proven pass rusher, but the Los Angeles Chargers have reportedly been reluctant to trade players despite sitting at 0-7. With six days remaining before the deadline, waiting for Los Angeles to change its position could leave Chicago with fewer opportunities elsewhere.
The Bears have made it clear that they are looking to improve their defense, but they should not overlook the cornerback position while pursuing a reunion with Mack. Adding another reliable option opposite Johnson could help address an area that has created problems throughout the season.
