Brooklyn Nets fans got the moment they've been waiting for on Wednesday. After missing Brooklyn's first three preseason games with an ankle injury, No. 6 pick Mikel Brown Jr. made his Nets debut during a 144-128 loss to the Miami Heat. The rookie guard didn't disappoint.
Brown scored 15 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field, 2-of-5 from three and 5-of-5 from the free-throw line in 18 minutes off the bench. He added three rebounds, three assists and two steals with only one turnover.
Head coach Jordi Fernandez was highly encouraged by the rookie's performance.
“[Mikel's] pace and how he moves out there [stands out]. He looked great,” Fernandez said. “And it's just his first few minutes. So, he's going to continue to get better and build from there. I loved his communication, how engaged he was with his teammates. I thought it was a very well-played 18 minutes for him.”
Brown didn't waste any time getting involved offensively. On his second possession, he saw Nikola Jovic go under a screen, pulled up and drained a deep three.

Brown added another deep catch-and-shoot three later in the game.

While Brown's shot-making and passing were undeniable during his freshman season at Louisville, he struggled as a decision-maker. The Orlando native averaged 3.1 turnovers per game and shot 41.0 percent from the field across 19 appearances for the Cardinals.
However, Brown showed impressive poise against a physical Heat defense during his Nets debut.

The 20-year-old was willing to take what Miami's defense gave him. He attacked the rim when presented a driving lane, scoring and finishing on a couple of possessions and drawing fouls on several others. With the Heat showing him two defenders on ball screens, Brown calmly dished pocket passes to a rolling Moe Wagner.
That action led to three consecutive Nets buckets during a third-quarter stretch.

Meanwhile, the majority of Brown's shot attempts came within the flow of Brooklyn's offense. Entering training camp, Brown said that making the simple read was a main focus of his offseason.
“That's something that I definitely looked at during this pre-draft process, and that's just something that I'm continuing to cut down,” Brown said of his turnovers. “Honestly, any read that I think I'm going to make, I'm thinking it's going to be the right read, and if it goes bad, it goes bad. So it's just the flow of the game. It just happens. I'm looking to cut down my turnovers and take care of the ball, but that swagger is going to stay regardless. I'm a high-risk, high-reward guy. Obviously, I know sometimes it's better to hit the single, and that's what I've been talking to my coaches about, and I've gotten better at that.”
While the Nets' defense struggled overall against the Heat, Brown held up well in his individual matchups.
Brown played no minutes alongside fellow lottery pick Egor Demin on Wednesday. He instead paired with Nolan Traore in the backcourt as part of Brooklyn's second unit. Veteran guard Keon Ellis continued to pair with Demin in the Nets' starting backcourt.
Brown played under an unspecified minutes restriction during his debut. He'll have a week to recover before the Nets host the Charlotte Hornets during their regular-season opener on Oct. 21 at Barclays Center.
