The New York Mets decided to move on from manager Carlos Mendoza during the regular season. It seemed as if Mendoza would be a candidate to manage once again in 2027. Sure enough, Mendoza was reportedly linked to the Seattle Mariners manager opening before he joined the Philadelphia Phillies as a third base and infield coach, according to Jorge Castillo of ESPN.
“Carlos Mendoza was a candidate for the Mariners' managerial job before withdrawing his name to become the Phillies' third base and infield coach, sources told ESPN. The Mariners and Astros are currently the two teams looking for a manager,” Castillo reported Saturday.
Mendoza, 46, could certainly end up managing once again at the big league level someday. In 2024 and 2025, he led the Mets to winning seasons — including a 2024 postseason appearance. New York moved on from him following a 34-47 beginning to the 2026 campaign. Nevertheless, Mendoza has displayed managing prowess.
For now, he will look to play a crucial role on Don Mattingly's coaching staff in Philadelphia. Meanwhile, the Mariners are still searching for their next manager after moving on from Dan Wilson following the 2026 campaign.
