Manchester City returned to Premier League action for the first time after being found guilty of 114 breaches related to the Premier League financial rules with a controversial 3-0 victory over Liverpool. But the day was dominated by talk away from the pitch.

City travelled to a hostile Anfield where they were greeted with boo’s and chants of “cheats”. The game was closely contested until a contentious red card for Liverpool’s Ryan Gravenberch swung the game in the away team’s favour.

Haaland, Doku and Cherki all scored within 13 minutes of each other, sending the City away end delirious. City have started the season with six wins from six games.

The announcement revealed But events on the pitch were overshadowed by the guilty verdict, which during the international break. There was a strange feeling for all involved as nobody really knows the importance of the victory.

Richard Masters, who is the chief executive of the Premier League, said in the statement announcing the verdict: “The core decision establishes the facts of what happened at Manchester City during this period. It details how the club systematically broke Premier League Rules for nearly a decade.”

This announcement rocked football and has dominated headlines since breaking a few weeks ago.

The Premier League is facing huge credibility challenges

City’s perfect start on the pitch further mounts pressure upon the Premier League. The club have appealed the guilty verdict, claiming they have “irrefutable evidence” proving their innocence. This will only delay the announcement of the sanctions that the club will face.

The potential sanctions the club could face range from fines to transfer bans to points deductions to the most extreme punishment, expulsion from the league.

Until we know the sanctions the club is handed, the league continues as it was before. However, a sour taste was left in the mouths of many fans of the Premier League as Man City continue to top the league amidst the huge scandal.

Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports: “We know that Manchester City go three points clear the top of the league, but there’s a feeling that ultimately this is not going to be where Manchester City finish.” He continued: “There is a ‘but’, there is some sort of shadow hanging over it.”

The shadow the City situation is bringing to the Premier League is concerning for the league’s reputation. It would be nothing short of a disaster for the league if City were to win the title the same season they’re found guilty of 114 rule breaches. The Premier League will struggle to continue to have the reputation as the biggest and strongest league in the world if it is won by a team the league itself has branded as “cheats”.

Clubs, fans and pundits are all hopeful of a swift resolution to this situation to put an end to the uncertainty this case is causing. The longer the case remains unresolved, the more pressure the Premier League will be under to prove that the financial rules carry legitimate consequences. Manchester City may continue to win games on the pitch, but off the pitch they. The Premier League is both facing a battle to save face in a damaging dispute which has rumbled on for years.
