The New York Giants made a big move at the quarterback position on Monday. New York acquired J.J. McCarthy from Minnesota after Jameis Winston did not look good in Week 3. But is McCarthy really the answer to all of New York's problems?
Former NFL offensive lineman Kyle Long gave some free advice to McCarthy during a recent segment. He explained how McCarthy needs to approach this next phase of his career.
“I think the understanding has to be clear, the messaging has to be clear to this young man,” Long said on Tuesday via NFL on CBS. “Jameis is the guy and when the guy with the diamonds comes back he's playing quarterback. So don't get it twisted young man, none of this nine. I don't care what your number is, you're here to learn how to play the quarterback position, learn how to be a professional.”
The Giants have welcomed McCarthy with open arms. But that does not mean McCarthy will suddenly become the franchise quarterback for the Giants. But he could be a useful player for them at some point this season.
McCarthy needs to make the most of this opportunity to start fresh in a new locker room.
“There's certain things throughout the course of your career, I made a lot of regrettable decisions early in my career. Things that make you go gosh I can't believe I did that, what an idiot,” Long added. “And there's certain things, thanks to social media, that I'm sure J.J. McCarthy wants back. Or the cameraman who caught McCarthy making that face in the locker room. I know we're not talking football, but that's the league we live in now. He gets an opportunity to restart in a locker room. And look, they need him and he needs them, so I think it's a good situation for him.”
It will be fascinating to see how McCarthy looks whenever he makes his debut in New York.
