Kentucky Wildcats’ spot in AP Top 25 Poll stolen despite comeback road win over South Carolina

Will Stein and the Kentucky Wildcats had shocking news about their place in the latest AP Top 25 football poll despite beating the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday afternoon.

Stein is going through his first year as the Wildcats' head coach, looking to get them back into serious contention as a strong SEC squad. So far, they are off to a strong start with a 4-1 record after Week 5, pulling off a comeback win over the Gamecocks.

Kentucky had the 24th spot in last week's poll. However, they had trouble against South Carolina. As a result, the Wildcats did not have a presence in the latest rankings. Teams like Boise State, SMU and Pittsburgh took the last three spots of the poll.

Pittsburgh made the biggest jump in the newest poll. They jumped up seven spots from last week to insert themselves into the rankings.

How Kentucky played against South Carolina

It's quite remarkable for Kentucky to come back in the way they did. South Carolina should have been able to hold them off at home, but it's clear the Wildcats are a different football team than in years past. Their 4-1 record after five games is a major example of that.Kentucky periodically cut down the 17-points deficit. They responded with 10 points in the first quarter, 14 in the third quarter then three in the fourth to force overtime. South Carolina tried to hold them off with a touchdown in the period, but Kentucky went for the dagger with the go-ahead two-point conversion.

Kenny Minchey was active with his passing, having the courage to make the big plays. He completed 28 out of 41 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns.

CJ Baxter had a decent outing in the run game, racking up 13 carries for 48 yards and a touchdown. Kenny Darby shined in the receiving corps with 12 catches for 96 yards and a touchdown, while Nic Anderson caught five passes for 80 yards and a touchdown.

The No. 24 Wildcats will look forward to their next matchup, being at home. They host the No. 11 LSU Tigers in Week 6 as kickoff commences on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. ET.
