Game 4 of the American League Division Series did not begin on the best note for the Cleveland Guardians. Parker Messick struggled in the 3rd and was ultimately unable to get out of the inning. Cleveland ended up limiting the damage, as only two runs scored in the inning. Jose Ramirez ended up leading a resilient comeback effort as the Guards won the game 9-5. While speaking to reporters after the win, Ramirez revealed that he made Messick a guarantee during the game.
“It was very exciting. It's a special moment when you have that type of energy from the guys,” Ramirez said in reference to the high-energy moment that happened after his clutch home run during Game 4. “I had a particular conversation with Messick before that; I told him I'm going to get this turned around for you, and I was able to execute it. It was really special.
“It was great energy out there, and very special to share this with the guys.”
Messick is a strong American League Rookie of the Year candidate. He also earned an All-Star selection this season. While his performance on Thursday was underwhelming, the reality of the situation is that Cleveland is asking a rookie to lead the rotation in the postseason — which is a challenging task.
