The longest run from a Giants running back this season was a 13-yarder by Cam Skattebo. Giants coach John Harbaugh says that’s not good enough.
Harbaugh said today that the Giants’ running game needs to generate some explosive runs and make some big games, and so far it isn’t doing that.
“We’re just not good enough yet,” Harbaugh said. “Defenses are playing us pretty well. As we get better, we’ll probably have more longer runs, also if we make them pay more with play action, I think that’ll loosen them up a little probably. We’ve just got to keep getting better. The guys are working hard at it. We’re playing very hard. We’re trying to play very physically. All the elements are there, we just have to get better.”
Skattebo is more of a bruising power runner than a big-play explosive runner, and his 3.5 yards per carry are down this year from the 4.1 he averaged as a rookie last year. Harbaugh would like to see Skattebo do more, and the offense do more to give Skattebo the opportunity.
