Joe Burrow has been a great quarterback for his entire career, but there's been one major knock on him. The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback's health has been his biggest enemy in his career so far. That's why when there's any news about Burrow potentially dealing with an injury, fans start holding their breath.
On Thursday night, Bengals fans were greeted with some unpleasant news. Ian Rapoport reported on The Insiders that Burrow is reportedly dealing with back discomfort. The insider points to a diving play made by the quarterback as the likely cause for the injury. While this news is certainly unpleasant for Cincinnati fans, Rapoport does note that it's âÂÂa situation to be monitoredâÂÂ, not something that Bengals fans should lose sleep over.
Given Burrow's previous injury history, it's worth highlighting who will take over for the Bengals in case he misses time. Joe Flacco returned to the team this offseason after filling in quite well for Burrow last season. He'll likely step in as the starting quarterback in the unlikely event that the star quarterback misses time again, with Josh Johnson being the likely emergency quarterback in that scenario.
It's encouraging, at least, that Burrow did not exit the game against the Buccaneers despite taking that hit in Week 1. The Bengals quarterback finished with a mediocre statline by his standards: he completed 25 of his 35 pass attempts for 254 yards, throwing one touchdown and one interception. The interception was particularly brutal, as it was returned by the Buccaneers for a pick-6. Burrow also added 20 yards on the ground.
The Bengals started off the season strong, winning against the Buccaneers 33-27. The new-look Cincinnati defense balled out in that game, forcing four fumbles and holding the Tampa Bay defense to just 20 points. Considering how abysmal this unit was last season, this performance was truly noteworthy. Even with Burrow having an uncharacteristic game and Ja'Marr Chase being mostly invisible, Cincinnati still found a way to win.
Next up for the Bengals is a matchup against the Houston Texans on the road. Considered as one of the best defenses in the league coming into the season, Houston's defense gave up 36 points to the Buffalo Bills.
