The Los Angeles Chargers rise as one of the biggest NFL surprises for Field Yates. But not in a good way for the popular ESPN NFL Draft and fantasy football personality. Even the Bolts starting at 0-4 with the Jim Harbaugh/Mike McDaniel collaboration has perplexed many, including Yates.

But Yates diagnosis of the Chargers points to a larger problem. Which he described as a “smashmouth versus Ferrari” approach.

Yates spoke exclusively to ClutchPoints through his partnership with Red Baron pizza. He didn't mince words for Harbaugh/McDaniel and quarterback Justin Herbert, who's also under fire lately.

“I would argue that Justin Herbert is a much more talented QB than Tua Tagovailoa. But he hasn't performed well at all. It's been a bad fit between Jim Harbaugh and McDaniel. Harbaugh wants to be this old school, smash mouth approach and McDaniel wants to be a Ferrari approach,” Yates tells ClutchPoints.

Chargers have looked disorganized

The “approach” has painted the picture that the Bolts have become a disorganized bunch. And again, Yates joins the population of confused analysts who thought this system would reignite the Chargers.

“Mike McDaniel once took a lowly offense and made them one of the most highly octane in the NFL with Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. But through the first four weeks of the season, it's hard to tell if it's because Tyreek and Jaylen don't play for the Chargers, or if it's something else,” Yates said.

Now there's the feeling this partnership between Harbaugh and McDaniel will end quicker than expected. Yet Harbaugh denied after the 30-23 loss to the Seattle Seahawks that the offensive coordinator's job is on the line. Harbaugh also continues to vehemently defend Herbert despite looking like he's playing “hero ball” amid poor offensive line play and injuries on offense.

Yates, meanwhile, is helping lead the “Crunchtime” promotion for Red Baron pizza as part of the brand's “Field Access” promotion. So fans can earn a weekly one-on-one strategy sessions with Yates, all aimed at helping fantasy players set their squads for a championship run. Promotional info can be found here.
