A’ja Wilson recently scripted WNBA history by becoming the first player ever to win the MVP award five times, also becoming the first to win it three times in a row. The Las Vegas Aces superstar is currently starring for her team in their second-round series against the Golden State Valkyries, which they are currently losing 2-0.

Wilson had an emotional reaction to the news post-game, explaining how she simply dreamed of surviving the world as a kid. Per a post on X by ClutchPoints, Wilson claimed that she was living her dreams.

“You dream as a young girl and you dream so big,” she said. “You write your goals out and just never imagine that you are able to check them all. Small wins, big wins, it truly means a lot, so I think that’s why I cried a little bit harder on this one.”

“15-year old A’ja wasn’t dreaming about being a 5-time MVP…of being a 3-time champion. She was just dreaming of surviving this world.”

Wilson also became the first player in WNBA history to average 25 points per game while shooting 50% from the field and 40% from 3-point range. Her points average of 26.2 per game is second only to the record of 26.9 points per game that she herself set back in the 2024 season.

“15-year-old A’ja wasn’t dreaming about being a 5-time MVP, or of being a 3-time champion. She was just dreaming of surviving this world,” she said. “So for me to sit up here surrounded by trophies and for me to play this game of basketball every single day, it just means a little bit more.”

Wilson received 65 of 74 first-place votes and 713 points as the Minnesota Lynx’s Olivia Miles finished second in voting with 442 points. The Indiana Fever’s Kelsey Mitchell was third, while Caitlin Clark and Breanna Stewart finished 4th and 5th, respectively.

Wilson averaged 26.2 points alongside 9.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.9 blocks per game this season. Across the WNBA and the NBA, only Kareem Abdul-Jabbar now has more MVP awards than Wilson with 6 as she ended up tying the likes of Michael Jordan and Bill Russell, who both won 6 MVP titles in the NBA.
