The Arizona Diamondbacks released outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on Friday, officially ending his four-season run with the club after designating him for assignment Sunday, according to the MLB.com transaction log.

The 32-year-old entered the final guaranteed season of a three-year, $42 million contract. With his release, Arizona remains responsible for the $5 million buyout attached to the $14 million team option for the 2027 season. Because Gurriel has enough service time to reject a minor league assignment, he was set to reach free agency rather than report to the minors.

The Cuban outfielder struggled during the 2026 season after returning from the ACL tear he suffered late in 2025. He came back on April 18 but dealt with additional injuries, including a left hamstring strain and a right adductor strain, resulting in two injured-list stints.

Gurriel appeared in 51 games and recorded a .210/.254/.290 slash line with two home runs and 22 RBIs across 201 plate appearances. His difficult season was a far cry from his previous run with the Diamondbacks, when he earned an All-Star selection in 2023 as Arizona reached the World Series for the second time.

Before joining the Diamondbacks, Gurriel spent his first five MLB seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays. Across nine major league seasons, he owns a career .271 batting average.

Arizona also moved on from reliever Derek Law, sending the 36-year-old through outright waivers after recently designating him for assignment. Law appeared in seven games for the Diamondbacks this season, allowing one run over nine innings while recording five strikeouts.

Law spent most of the season on the Triple-A injured list before reaching the majors in late August. His cutter, his primary pitch, averaged 89.9 mph. Arizona removed him from the roster after Ryne Nelson returned from the injured list Wednesday. Law can elect free agency rather than return to Triple-A Reno.
