The Dallas Stars are coming off a win against the Colorado Avalanche. The win was a big one for Dallas, who had lost two straight contests. However, the team felt they needed to add some more depth to the roster. As a result, they elected to sign veteran winger David Perron.

Perron was a free agent the entire summer after splitting last season between the Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings. He is now returning to the league for his 20th NHL season. On Friday, Stars head coach Glen Gulutzan explained why his team elected to make this move.

“We watched him (Thursday),” Gulutzan said, via NHL.com. “Obviously the veteran presence is there and his actual play, just how good he is along the walls. He's heavy and hard on pucks, he has a huge hockey IQ, he's competitive and that's the reason we got him.”

Perron has become a solid bottom-six winger over the last few years. The veteran winger has struggled with some injuries as well. Last season, he played 65 games, scoring 13 goals and 28 points.

The Stars are without center Matt Duchene for a few months. He has undergone core muscle surgery and is currently recovering from the procedure. Perron is not a center by trade, but does give the team depth at forward while Duchene is out.

Gulutzan noted that the veteran winger will not be with the Stars on Saturday due to visa issues. However, they do expect him in the lineup once he's up to speed. The Stars will look for a second straight win on Saturday when they take on the Chicago Blackhawks.
