Florida Panthers winger Brady Tkachuk staged another historic showcase Thursday night, scoring all three goals in a 3-2 overtime win over the Vancouver Canucks at Amerant Bank Arena. The 27-year-old completed his second consecutive natural hat trick, becoming the first NHL player to accomplish the feat since Petri Skriko did so with Vancouver in November 1986.
Florida trailed 2-0 entering the third period before Tkachuk orchestrated the comeback. After scoring three times in Tuesday's 7-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets, the forward followed up with another three-goal performance to give the Panthers consecutive wins.
Tkachuk began his scoring run at 11:11 of the third period, beating Canucks goaltender Leevi Merilainen with a wrist shot from above the right circle off an Aaron Ekblad pass. With goaltender Akira Schmid pulled for an extra attacker, he tied the game at 19:47 by converting a Carter Verhaeghe pass from the right faceoff circle, sending the puck off the far post with just 13 seconds remaining.
Florida completed the comeback at 2:23 of overtime when Tkachuk scored with a wrist shot from the left hash marks. His winner secured the Panthers' win and completed the fifth hat trick of his career.
The performance also placed Tkachuk among an exclusive group in franchise history. He became the third player in franchise history to record hat tricks in consecutive games, joining Pavel Bure and Noel Acciari. He also became the second player in team history to complete a hat trick with an overtime goal, following Aleksander Barkov, who accomplished the feat twice.
Brady's resurgence has been a dramatic reversal from his subdued start in Florida following his June 21 trade from the Ottawa Senators. He entered Tuesday's game without a goal through his first six appearances with the Panthers and had managed just one point in that stretch.
Brady now has six goals and two assists for eight points through eight games. His brother, Matthew Tkachuk, assisted on all three of Brady's goals versus the Blue Jackets and contributed another assist Thursday. Matthew has extended his point streak to seven games, logging three goals and eight assists for 11 points.
The brothers' production comes while Florida is without top-line center Aleksander Barkov and veteran winger Brad Marchand because of injuries.
Article Continues BelowVancouver built its early advantage through Liam Ohgren and defenseman Elias Pettersson. Ohgren opened the scoring at 7:23 of the first period after the Panthers failed to clear the puck, while Pettersson made it 2-0 during four-on-four play at 17:06. Filip Chytil, making his season debut after a preseason shoulder injury, assisted on Pettersson's goal.
Merilainen finished with 36 saves, while Schmid stopped 15 shots for Florida, which improved to 4-2-2. The Canucks fell to 2-6-1 and extended their losing streak to six games.
Florida now has 10 points, placing it in a three-way tie for second in the Atlantic Division. The Panthers will host the Seattle Kraken on Saturday night.
