Carmelo Anthony calling Jaylen Brown the NBA's best two-way player is a bold take, but Victor Wembanyama complicates that argument. Brown is outstanding, yet several superstars have equally compelling cases, including the Spurs star who won the Defensive Player of the Year.

Anthony recently praised the 76ers star as the league's premier two-way talent, suggesting Brown could win the Defensive Player of the Year if Wembanyama weren't around. HoopsHype also reported his remarks.

That qualification exposes the biggest problem with his argument. Wembanyama is around, and his elite rim protection, scoring, and defensive versatility make him an obvious counterargument.

The San Antonio Spurs superstar won Defensive Player of the Year for the 2025-26 season. His ability to protect the basket while carrying a significant offensive workload presents a standard Brown has yet to match defensively.

Then there's Giannis Antetokounmpo, a former Defensive Player of the Year and two-time MVP whose dominance on both ends has been established for years.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander also deserves consideration because of his scoring production, defensive activity, and ability to influence games without sacrificing offensive responsibility.

Jayson Tatum and Kawhi Leonard offer further competition, although Leonard's availability complicates his case.

Brown deserves recognition for his scoring, physical defense, and championship pedigree. However, he has never earned an All-Defensive Team selection, making Anthony's declaration particularly difficult to justify.

There's nothing unreasonable about calling Brown an excellent two-way player. Declaring him the best, especially while acknowledging Wembanyama's defensive superiority, is another matter entirely.

Anthony's praise for Brown is understandable, but calling him the league's best two-way player remains difficult to justify.
