The Chicago Cubs earned the second Wild Card spot in the National League and will be visiting the San Diego Padres in the NL Wild Card Series. The Cubs will potentially welcome Kevin Gausman back to the mound during the series.

Gausman will not be the Game 1 starter for the Cubs, as they announced a different arm starting in the first game, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Matthew Boyd will be the Game 1 starter for the Cubs against the Padres.

Boyd made 22 starts for the Cubs this year, going 10-5 with a 3.91 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. He was solid down the stretch, pitching five games in September. He went 2-2 in the month, with a 3.64 ERA during the month.

Boyd faced off with the Padres twice this past season. In the first meeting in April, he went four innings, giving up five runs. He did not take the loss, but the Cubs lost to the Padres 9-7. The second time he met with the Padres was in June. That game, they went five innings, giving up three runs, but took the win against the Padres.

The Cubs and Padres faced off in six games this past season. The Cubs took five of six games against the Padres this past season. Still, the last time the two teams faced off was on July 1, when the Cubs swept the Padres in Chicago.

The Padres host the Cubs starting on Tuesday at 10 pm ET. The Padres will be sending Michael King to the mound in Game 1.
