Chicago Cubs star Alex Bregman recently endured a frightening moment after getting hit in the face by a batted ball while standing in the on-deck circle during a game. While Bregman is not expected to go on the injured list, he is still working his way back to playing in games again. The third baseman spoke to reporters about the injury on Wednesday, via Jesse Rogers of ESPN.

“I felt like I got hit by a baseball bat to the face pretty much,” Bregman said. “Pain's been fine, I guess I fractured something right by the nerve in my face. Left side of my face has been a little bit numb. As soon as the swelling goes down, I'm sure I'll feel the breaks a little bit more, that's kind of what started last night because the swelling's been going down.

“Kind of felt that a little bit more this morning when I woke up. All in all, super lucky that it hit where it hit… If it was about two centimeters higher, it could have been detrimental.”

Bregman was also asked if he hopes to play this weekend. The infielder is hoping he can return possibly even sooner, via Vinnie Duber of the Chicago Sun-Times.

“Yeah, hope so,” the Cubs infielder said of potentially playing this weekend. “We'll see, one step at a time. I don't know, I'm going to try to get in there tonight.”
