The Dallas Cowboys are failing to live up to expectations during the 2026 NFL season. Dallas is 3-5 after an embarrassing overtime loss against Arizona in Week 8. Fans are not happy with the Cowboys right now, and that extends all the way up to the head coach and owner.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones completely denied the theory that he won't pay top dollar during head coach hires during a recent interview.
“There’s zero correlation between how much you pay a coach or how many coaches you have, to winning. There’s no correlation,” Jones said on 105.3 The FAN, per Cowboys reporter Joseph Hoyt. “That’s a random sample of years and all 32 teams involved, so put that in your hopper and smoke it.”
Jones' answer is less of a clear denial and more of an argument for why coaching salaries are irrelevant in the NFL. While player salaries are public information, the same information for head coaches is often kept secret. As such, it is difficult to know for sure whether or not this theory about Jones is accurate at all.
Cowboys fans do not seem thrilled about head coach Brian Schottenheimer. He has not had much success since becoming the head coach back in 2025. Fans clearly seem to want Jones to be more willing to pull the plug on the Schottenheimer era.
One observation that supports that theory is how often Dallas hires a new head coach. The Cowboys have only had six head coaches since the year 2000. Those coaches include Dave Campo (three seasons), Bill Parcells (four seasons), Wade Phillips (four seasons), Jason Garrett (10 seasons), Mike McCarthy (five seasons), and Schottenheimer (two seasons).

In the meantime, Dallas needs to get back in the win column quickly to keep their hopes alive.
Next up for the Cowboys is a Week 9 matchup against the Colts.
