As Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears diced up the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night, 34-17, there's no doubt a lot of excitement around the team after beating the reigning Super Bowl champions. With the Bears focusing their attention on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 9, a quote from Williams has rubbed sports analyst Chris Canty the wrong way.
After the game, Williams would speak on the fanbase in Chicago, saying that even through the legendary six championships from the Chicago Bulls, led by Michael Jordan, it was still a “Bear town.”
“When I was brought here. They told me that even through the times of Jordan and things like that, winning his championships, it is a Chicago Bears town,” Williams said.
Canty reacted to the comment from Williams on ESPN's “First Take,” saying that the quarterback is acting “goofy” comparing himself to Jordan.
“I don't know why he got to be a goofy after he won the biggest game of the season so far on Monday Night Football in a primetime spot,” Canty said. “I get that you're riding high. Y'all just beat the reigning, defending champs in their house. Like you ain't gotta go to the place of talking about Michael Jordan and what Chicago was in the '90s, dog. They won six championships in a decade with two separate three-peats. Stop it.”
Bears fans call out Chris Canty's criticism over Caleb Williams
Canty would then get corrected, saying that Williams was comparing what he heard from the fan reaction in the city to the Bears and Bulls, and the analyst would respond that “whoever told him that lied to him.”
Article Continues BelowThe comments under the X, formerly Twitter, post by the show were filled with Chicago fans calling out Canty, with one reaffirming Williams' point.
“How do you twist words like that? Spend some time in Chicago. It is a Bears town always!!!…You a big goofy for being one of the haters. Bum mentality,” @@wallenius_brian wrote on X.
At any rate, Williams and the Bears will focus on football as the team looks to beat Tampa Bay this Sunday.
