The Washington Commanders are dealing with the aftermath of Jayden Daniels’ injury. The horrific injury means a significant change for the organization. But another player got hurt, as a key defender spent the night in the hospital after the loss to the Cowboys.

Nick Cross suffered a serious injury, according to a post on X by Nicki Jhabvala.

“Safety Nick Cross was hospitalized in Dallas after the game and evaluated for an internal injury, according to (head coach Dan) Quinn. He was discharged this morning and is traveling back to Virginia.”

Cross has been one of the Commanders’ best players to date, totaling 11 tackles with three for loss in two games.

Commanders dealing with multiple key injuries

Cross signed with the Commanders in the offseason, getting a two-year, $13-million contract. He spent his first four NFL seasons with the Colts, starting all 17 games for them in each of the last two seasons.

Also, the Commanders lost two linemen to injuries. Left tackle Brandon Coleman left the game with a finger injury. And guard Sam Cosmi was sidelined by a concussion. The Commanders' line was already in shambles, arguably the worst unit in the NFL. Now, it’s potentially even weaker for Week 3 against the defending Super Bowl champions.

Of course, the big injury is Daniels. The Commanders don’t seem to have much of a chance to win games without his dynamic playmaking ability. Quinn said the Commanders will weigh their options for Daniels, according to USA Today.

“For he and all his teammates, we're always going to make the best decision first,” Quinn said regarding the team's approach a year after Daniels missed 10 games with various injuries, including the elbow, and probably tried to return too quickly. “

The Commanders have a banged-up offensive line. And Cross may be in danger of missing the Week 3 game. It could cause the Commanders to wave a white flag early against the Seahawks. Moving forward, the promise the 2026 season held seems to have been washed away in a sea of injuries.
