The Kansas City Chiefs recently started out their season with a bang by defeating the Denver Broncos in blowout fashion on Monday Night Football. This game marked the return of quarterback Patrick Mahomes after an ACL injury cut his season short last year, and he had some strong moments in his first game back.

Mahomes has become known for posting clock emojis on social media both on his own feed and in the comment sections of others, and now, the inspiration for this practice has been revealed.

“He said growing up, his father and his father's friends gave him the nickname ‘2pm.' That goes back to his initials, PM, and also the fact that he was Patrick Mahomes II. You add those together, you get 2pm,” reported Jesse Newell of The Athletic on X, formerly Twitter.

Mahomes started out the game against the Broncos a bit rusty, including throwing a brutal interception in the third quarter on a miscommunication with wide receiver Xavier Worthy, but he largely got it together in the second half, hitting Travis Kelce for a huge gain on one particularly memorable play.

This year, the Chiefs are looking to retake their throne in the AFC after a down year in 2025 that saw the team miss the playoffs altogether, something they were well on their way to doing before Mahomes suffered his injury.

While there are still questions about Kansas City's receiving core and how its defensive depth will hold up, they certainly aced their first test of the season against Denver.
