The Kansas City Chiefs are eager to have cornerback Mansoor Delane back in action as soon as possible, but the rookie is currently dealing with another shoulder injury. Following the team's disappointing loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday, head coach Andy Reid offered an uncertain update regarding Delane's potential return.
While speaking to reporters on Monday, Reid explained that the Chiefs would continue evaluating Delane's recovery on a day-to-day basis. The head coach left the possibility open for the rookie to return in the upcoming Week 9, yet he added that Delane's shoulder must regain sufficient strength before he can safely get back on the field.
“It’s just a matter of it being strong enough to get out there,” Reid said. “There’s a chance that he’ll be able to get himself out there this week. Again, it’s just how strong it is. It’s going to be a day-to-day thing.”
Delane was ultimately ruled out of Kansas City's Week 8 game against Denver after initially being listed as questionable. The Chiefs added the rookie to their injury report on Thursday after he sustained the shoulder injury during Wednesday's practice.
The issue has troubled Delane since the offseason, dating back to organized team activities. Following his latest setback, the rookie also missed Kansas City's next two practice sessions before the team officially ruled him out ahead of Sunday's matchup.
Despite the recurring injury concerns, Delane has delivered an encouraging start to his rookie season. Across five appearances, the former LSU cornerback has registered 27 tackles, one interception, and five passes defended.

The Chiefs will continue monitoring Delane's recovery as they prepare for their upcoming meeting with the New York Jets. Wednesday's first practice of the week should offer a better indication of his progress and whether he has a realistic chance of returning to the lineup.
