The Chicago Bears have a lot to look forward to in Week 6. Caleb Williams seems destined to return this weekend, which would be a great news for Chicago's offense. The Bears may need that boost, as their defense has struggled in recent games.
ESPN's Ben Baby shared a chart on social media showing how effective NFL cornerbacks have been in coverage so far this season. The chart measures coverage effectiveness by both time in tight coverage per snap and yards allowed per coverage snap.
Unfortunately, this chart makes Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson look pretty awful.
Johnson fell all the way on the left hand side of the chart, giving him the highest yards allowed per coverage snap in the league at just under 2.5. He ranked just above league average for time in tight coverage per snap, but that hardly matters when he's giving up so many yards.
But Johnson is not the only Bears defender who looks bad on this chart. The closest player to Johnson is Malik Muhammad, who is also struggling early in the season.
It is no secret that Johnson has struggled throughout the 2026 season. He has allowed 283 receiving yards on 18 targets over the last five games. In fact, opposing quarterbacks have a 83% completion percentage when targeting Johnson over that span. Simply put, Johnson is someone that opposing offenses seek out to attack instead of shying away from.
Article Continues BelowThis is a huge problem for a Chicago defense that could really use a lockdown CB1. The Bears are already invested in Johnson, signing him to a four-year, $76 million extension back in 2024. It seems that the groin injury that haunted Johnson throughout the 2025 season is still bothering him. That, or he's simply lost a step.
Either way, the veteran cornerback's regression is bad news for the Bears. Hopefully they can overcome his struggles this season and work on a long-term solution during the offseason.
Next up for the Bears is a Week 6 matchup against the Falcons.
