Jim Harbaugh is aware that he is not maximizing Justin Herbert's ceiling as the Los Angeles Chargers star quarterback to start the 2026 NFL season.

Los Angeles is often in the picture for playoff contention, having garnered big regular-season victories over the years. However, they have taken steps back to start 2026 after losing to the Arizona Cardinals and the Las Vegas Raiders.

Harbaugh addressed these results with media on Monday, per reporter Kris Rhim. He took accountability for the team's struggles, knowing he must put Herbert in better positions so they can flourish with more highlights instead of making mistakes in critical moments.

“Harbaugh said he felt like the team is letting Justin Herbert down and pointed to both interceptions. First was dropped by Njoku, second he said WR Derius Davis was supposed to be wider on his route,” Rhim wrote.

“Two interceptions that were really exactly what he was supposed to do … But yeah, the ability to shake that off as a quarterback, I mean, that speaks volumes to who he is,” Harbaugh said.

What lies ahead for Justin Herbert, Chargers this season

Justin Herbert and the Chargers have time to regain themselves with the season still early. However, it will have to be quick as the games won't get easier.

This season, Herbert has completed 32 out of 54 passes for 401 yards and two touchdowns and three interceptions. With Jim Harbaugh knowing why those interceptions happened, the Chargers should be able to make adjustments heading into Week 3.

Los Angeles' next five games feature opponents that have strong cases as serious contenders. Buffalo, Seattle, Denver, and the Rams stand out among the bunch, presenting concern for the Chargers if they don't get it together soon.

The Chargers seek their first win of the season when they gear up for their next matchup, being on the road. They take on the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. ET.
