The New York Giants held off the Tennessee Titans for a 12-7 win on Sunday, and Giants running back Cam Skattebo thinks it proves how much the team has improved.
New York led 12-0 until Tennessee scored a late touchdown in the fourth quarter, setting up a tense finish as the Titans then marched down the field again for a potential game-winning score. Instead, safety Jevon Holland sealed the win with an interception of Cam Ward in the end zone with just 14 seconds left.
After the game, Skattebo gave a straightforward take on how the Giants finished the win.
“That was a great win. A year ago, we lose that game 100%,” Skattebo said, according to ESPN NFL Nation reporter Jordan Raanan.
Skattebo’s comment highlights what he sees as a big change from last year’s Giants. This time, instead of letting a close game get away, New York made the key plays when it counted.
The Giants’ offense struggled to score with Jameis Winston at the helm in place of the injured Jaxson Dart, so the team relied on its running game and defense. Skattebo ran 20 times for 60 yards. He also made a career-long 30-yard catch to help set up one of Dominic Zvada’s four field goals.
The defense delivered that game-winning play with Holland's game-saving interception after the Titans drove inside the 10-yard line. The Giants have lost quarterback Dart for the season, so finding ways to win without playing perfect football could be important. Sunday's victory moved New York to 2-1, and Winston is expected to get another chance in Week 4.
