Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman was replaced by a pinch-hitter in the top of the fourth inning of Chicago's game against the Reds on Sunday at Great American Ball Park after he was hit in the face by a foul ball while standing in the on-deck circle.
Michael Busch flicked right-hander Luis Mey's 1-2 pitch foul on a check swing, and the ball bounced up and struck Bregman in the face. Bregman immediately went into the dugout and down the steps to the clubhouse, with blood visible on his face.
Matt Shaw replaced Bregman and drew a walk. He remained in the game to play second base, with Pedro Ramirez shifting to third base.
The Cubs, who were winning 5-0 at the time of Bregman's exit, can clinch a postseason berth on Sunday with a victory over the Reds and a D-backs loss to the Yankees.
