Because expectations were low, we walk away from Cincy’s 33-27 win over Baker Mayfield and the Bucs thinking better of the Bengals’ defense than we thought we would. Meanwhile, the Houston Texans (0-1) entered the season with a Top 3 defense at worst according to the experts and after watching them give up 36 to Josh Allen and the Bills, we stop and wonder if we need to reassess our trust in the Texans’ defense. Each team gets another opportunity to prove itself this Sunday in Houston when the Bengals and Texans meet.

The Bengals scored 24 points off Tampa Bay turnovers and forced four takeaways overall. The biggest play came early when defensive end Myles Murphy strip-sacked Baker Mayfield and linebacker Demetrius Knight Jr. returned the fumble 27 yards for a touchdown. The defense continued creating havoc throughout the first half. A second Buccaneers’ fumble led to a Joe Burrow touchdown pass to Mike Gesicki, and a third turnover eventually resulted in a Chase Brown’s rushing touchdown. Tampa Bay rallied in the second half, trimming the deficit to one score, but kicker Evan McPherson drilled field goals from 55 and 58 yards to help seal the victory. Burrow led scoring drives on six of Cincinnati’s seven possessions after an opening three-and-out.

While the defense struggled to slow down Josh Allen and co. last Sunday, Houston may have come away encouraged by its offensive performance. The Texans traded punches with Buffalo throughout a back-and-forth contest and actually held a fourth-quarter lead before Allen engineered a late game-winning touchdown drive. Houston struck first on a David Montgomery touchdown run and continued finding ways to score against one of the AFC’s elite teams. Late in the second quarter, C.J. Stroud connected with Nico Collins for a touchdown that cut Buffalo’s lead to 24-21. In the fourth quarter, Stroud found Montgomery again for a touchdown reception, helping Houston reclaim the lead. Ultimately, Buffalo’s explosive passing attack proved too much. Josh Allen threw a late 34-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Palmer, and the Bills escaped Houston with a 36-31 victory. Stroud and the Texans accumulated 381 total yards and 26 first downs but two costly turnovers proved to be the difference.

Bottom Line: The single most important factor in this game is how badly the Bengals’ offense matches up with Houston’s defense. The Texans ranked 2nd in points allowed (17.35 per game), 4th in yards allowed (320.29 per game), 4th in plays allowed (57.94 per game), and 4th in rushing yards allowed (93.71 per game) last season. They were 3rd in interceptions (19), 2nd in interception rate (3.53%), 3rd in completion percentage allowed (59.29%), and 7th in sack rate (8.74%). That’s a defense that takes away the pass, gets after the quarterback, and forces teams to grind out drives. Against a Cincinnati offense that ranked 29th in rushing yards (93.59 per game) and 22nd in yards per carry (4.18) last season, the Bengals are going to be one-dimensional — and that’s exactly the profile Houston’s ball-hawking secondary feasts on.
