One of the best to ever do it. This video is why he’s the best – Ernie Johnson understands the connection people have with those they watch for years of their lives – and his honesty and relatability and goodness are why he’s been so successful. “One of the best to ever do it,” Stiller raved. “This video is why he’s the best – Ernie Johnson understands the connection people have with those they watch for years of their lives – and his honesty and relatability and goodness are why he’s been so successful. Will miss seeing him all season long but am happy he’s doing what is right for him now.
“Love you Ernie and thanks for keeping us company all these years,” he concluded.
Why is Ernie Johnson leaving Inside the NBA?

On Wednesday, Oct. 28, Johnson announced his intentions to leave Inside the NBA—which he has hosted for 37 years—after the current 2026-27 season.
Article Continues BelowOne of the key deciding factors was the “preparation” required to host the show. Johnson explained that if the prep became “more of a challenge than it is a joy,” he would stop hosting Inside the NBA. Additionally, he has dealt with some heart issues. He is fine to keep working, but he wants to “slow down a bit” and enjoy time with his family.
This shouldn't come as a surprise. Over the summer, Charles Barkley said he was stepping away from the show after this year because of Johnson. They are a “package deal,” and Barkley was only going to keep doing the show as long as the host did it.
Still, it is a sad announcement. Luckily, Johnson is giving fans months to brace for his exit. The 2026-27 NBA season has only just begun, and expect Johnson and the rest of the Inside the NBA crew to continue creating memorable moments this year.
