Auburn football fans celebrated a landmark win on Saturday as the Tigers defeated No. 1 Georgia 27-24 in Athens, ending a nine-game losing streak in the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry.

With no opportunity to celebrate on the field at Sanford Stadium, supporters gathered at Toomer's Corner in Auburn, covering the famous oak trees with toilet paper to commemorate the upset.

The victory was the Tigers first win over the Bulldogs since 2017 and their first triumph against a top-ranked Georgia team since 1942. It also validated the groundwork laid by first-year head coach Alex Golesh, whose team improved to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in SEC play.

Auburn faced an early 14-0 deficit but responded with 24 consecutive points to take a 24-14 advantage into the fourth quarter. Georgia eventually tied the contest at 24-24 with 2:58 remaining after quarterback Gunner Stockton connected with wide receiver London Humphreys for a four-yard touchdown.

The Tigers defense came up with the game-winning play in the closing minute. After the Bulldogs advanced toward field-goal range, Stockton fumbled following a collision with center Drew Bobo. Safety Sylvester Smith-Reed recovered the ball at Auburn's 44-yard line with 58 seconds remaining, giving the visitors another opportunity.

Stockton finished with two interceptions and a fumble, accounting for three turnovers. The Tigers capitalized when kicker Alex McPherson converted a 34-yard field goal as time expired, securing the three-point victory.

Auburn finished with 366 total yards compared with Georgia's 440. However, the Tigers' ability to force three turnovers and convert all three of its red-zone opportunities made the difference. The team also overcame 11 penalties to pull off the upset.

Quarterback Byrum Brown played a central role in Auburn's comeback, rushing for 115 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries while throwing for 150 yards and another score.

Brown momentarily remained on the ground after taking a late hit from Bulldogs linebacker Khamari Brooks in the second quarter but returned on the following play. His performance made him the first player to record at least 150 passing yards and 100 rushing yards against a No. 1-ranked team since Oklahoma's quarterback Kyler Murray accomplished the feat against Alabama in 2018.

What made the Tigers' comeback all the more impressive was Georgia's record of holding substantial leads. The Bulldogs had entered Saturday with a 53-game winning streak against unranked opponents, which was the longest active streak of its kind in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

The result set off celebrations across Auburn, with fans filling the intersection of College Street and Magnolia Avenue to participate in the university's traditional win ritual. Golesh also learned that supporters had covered his home with toilet paper while he was still celebrating with his players.

The victory ended a difficult stretch for the Tigers, who had posted five consecutive losing seasons since 2021 and entered the game on a 12-game road losing streak against ranked opponents.

Auburn will now turn its attention to LSU, which visits Jordan-Hare Stadium next week for a noon ET kickoff. Georgia, meanwhile, enters its bye week after suffering its first defeat of the season, falling to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
