Following their disappointing opening round playoff exit, there’s no doubt that the Indiana Fever need a roster retool if they want to be taken seriously as WNBA contenders. With foundational players in Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston, the Fever are closer to their goal that not, but they still need to strengthen their roster, leaving fans on social media dreaming of potentially adding stars Kelsey Plum and Napheesa Collier via free agency in the offseason.
Adding a potential star like Kelsey Plum or Napheesa Collier, as farfetched as it may seem, almost certainly means that franchise mainstay Kelsey Mitchell is gone via free agency. The former No. 2 overall pick is an unrestricted free agent after signing a one-year contract this past offseason. Mitchell’s end-of-season comments recently have cast doubt as to her re-signing with the Fever, the only franchise she’s ever known.
Fans love to dream, and dream big, and the biggest hurdle preventing the Fever from outright signing both Plum and Collier, even with a potential Mitchell departure, is the WNBA’s CBA. The Fever simply do not have the cap space to sign what is expected to be max contracts for two of the league’s top available options. Plum and Collier will be among the best-of-the-best available free agents.
Article Continues BelowThe Fever already have Boston under max contracts, and even without Mitchell, the organization is almost assuredly going to give Clark a max contract extension. Clark is currently on her rookie scale deal of which the Fever have already picked up her option for 2027. However, via the new CBA, Clark and the Fever can renegotiate her fourth-year salary to a max contract extension.
