New York Yankees starter Cam Schlittler has authored a sophomore campaign that will likely end in his first AL Cy Young Award. The 25-year-old from Massachusetts has spurned his home state to star for the Yankees. A masterful AL Wild Card Game 1 start against the Boston Red Sox showcased just how far Schlittler has come. Although his AL Division Series (ALDS) Game 2 start against the Tampa Bay Rays didn't go as well, many hold Schlittler in high regard. In an interview with Casino.ca, former New York first baseman Anthony Rizzo dropped a comparison to a likely future Hall of Famer.
“I mean, he's a young Max Scherzer, right?” queried Rizzo in the interview. “Just comes at you, kind of long-leggers. He's dominating right now.”
A comparison to Scherzer makes a lot of sense. Both starters are fiery competitors. Schlittler has drawn the ire of Red Sox fans many times in his short tenure with the Yankees. Scherzer has riled up his share of opponents throughout a long, storied career. Each of them possesses nasty stuff, although Scherzer is no longer at the peak of his powers. Yet, in his prime, there was a strong argument he was baseball's best starter. Will Schlittler soar to those heights as well?
Article Continues BelowThe Yankees certainly hope that will be the case. The flame-throwing righty would certainly love at least one more chance to start this postseason. It could come in a potential Game 5 against the Rays, if New York captures Games 3 and 4 in the Bronx. Will Schlittler get another chance to add to his growing legend, as Scherzer did before him? If so, the Yankees' quest for their 28th World Series title could be accomplished in just a few weeks' time.
