The Philadelphia Phillies' magic number to clinch a playoff berth is just three. As the team gets ready for a run to the MLB playoffs, the Phillies recently got good news about pitcher Jesus Luzardo.

Now, the Phils are getting some more positive injury news around pitchers, according to MLB.com.

The first piece of positive news is surrounding relief pitcher Jonathan Bowlan.

“Sustained the injury Sept. 17 but is optimistic he (Bowlan) might pitch again before the end of the regular season. Played catch on Sept. 20, with the club saying it went well,” the update read.

Bowlan has been solid in his first year with the Phillies. He has made 59 appearances so far this year, pitching 56.1 innings. Bowlan has a 3.36 ERA with a 2-2 record, while having 14 holds and two saves. He has been solid in the middle relief role, and having him back for the playoffs would be a major benefit for the bullpen.

Meanwhile, the Phillies also got more news on Jesus Luzardo.

“Scratched from Sept. 12 start, then landed on IL after shoulder did not improve. Eligible to return for final game of regular season. Played catch on Sept. 20 in New York, said it went well,” the update on the starting pitcher read.

Luzardo last pitched on September 7, and the Phillies had won seven straight games when he was on the mound. Overall, he is 14-5 on the year with a 2.87 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. If Luzardo can return for the playoffs, the Phillies will have a solid group of options in the rotation. Beyond Luzardo, the team has Cristopher Sanchez, Aaron Nola, and Zach Wheeler, who could be used in the rotation.

The Phillies are 86-70 this year and in second place in the NL East. They currently are in control of the third wild card spot in the National League and four games ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks for that spot. They are also one game behind the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres in the wild card race. The Phillies open a three game series with the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night.
