Grambling State University is bringing a familiar face from one of television's most iconic HBCU-inspired shows to campus for a special occasion.

Award-winning actress Jasmine Guy, best known for her role as Whitley Gilbert on the beloved sitcom A Different World, is set to deliver the keynote address at Grambling State University's fall commencement ceremony this December.

For generations of viewers, Guy helped bring the HBCU experience into homes across the country through her portrayal of the unforgettable Southern belle at the fictional Hillman College. Now, decades after inspiring audiences through the groundbreaking series, she's preparing to celebrate a new generation of graduates as they close one chapter of their academic journeys and prepare for the next.

Guy has also returned to the world of Hillman College, reprising her role as Whitley Gilbert for the new Netflix A Different World sequel, which aims to introduce a new generation of viewers to the culture and traditions of HBCUs.

While she is best known for her role on A Different World, Guy has built an impressive entertainment career spanning more than four decades. Her television and film credits include Grey's Anatomy, School Daze, Harlem Nights, K.C. Undercover, Harlem, and The Quad.

Her talent extends beyond the screen to the stage, where she has appeared in productions of Grease, The Wiz, and Chicago, further showcasing her versatility as a performer.

Recognizing Guy's contributions to entertainment and her lasting influence on HBCU culture, Grambling State University President Martin Lemelle Jr. expressed his excitement about welcoming the actress to campus.

“Jasmine Guy's career is a powerful example of excellence, versatility, and purpose,” Lemelle said. “Her work shapes culture and inspires generations, including students and graduates across the HBCU community. We are honored to welcome her to Grambling State as we celebrate the Fall Class of 2026 and the next chapter in their journeys.”

Although Guy is not an HBCU alumna, her connection to historically Black colleges and universities extends beyond her iconic television role. Having grown up near Morehouse College in Atlanta, she has long been familiar with the culture and legacy of HBCUs.

“I grew up in the shadow of Morehouse College and have admired Grambling State from afar for many years as one of our most revered and celebrated HBCUs,” Guy said. “I am both honored and excited to be speaking at this fall's commencement, and hopefully I'll get to hear that fabulous World Famed Tiger Marching Band. Geaux Tigers!”

Grambling State University's Fall 2026 Commencement Ceremony is scheduled for December 4, 2026, at 10 a.m. at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
