The American League playoff race somehow keeps getting tighter.

With the regular season ending Sept. 27, almost every remaining game matters across the AL, particularly in the Central and the crowded race for the final Wild Card spot.

And here come the Cleveland Guardians. Again.

Cleveland has made a habit in recent seasons of finding another gear when September arrives, and 2026 is becoming the latest example. After taking two of three from the Chicago White Sox, the Guardians have jumped a half-game ahead of their division rivals for first place in the AL Central.

Chicago had controlled the division for much of the season under Will Venable, who has built a strong case for AL Manager of the Year consideration. But the White Sox suddenly find themselves chasing Cleveland with fewer than two weeks remaining.

It's difficult not to think about what Cleveland accomplished last September, when the Guardians erased Detroit's massive AL Central advantage before ultimately winning the division. Now they're attempting another late-season takeover.

The chaos doesn't end there.

Texas has won four straight games and has pulled even with Houston, keeping the Rangers firmly involved in the Wild Card conversation. Baltimore has won three consecutive games, while Toronto picked up another important victory Wednesday.

All three clubs need to keep stacking wins while hoping either Cleveland, Chicago, or Houston gives them an opening. Boston and New York remain in considerably better positions and are closing in on securing postseason spots, although the Red Sox have dropped two straight. Meanwhile, Detroit, Minnesota, and Seattle are approaching elimination and could officially see their postseason hopes disappear by the weekend.

But the AL might be even more unpredictable.

The Guardians and White Sox are battling for the Central, with several teams still alive behind them, and every night could completely reshuffle the standings.

Welcome to the final 10 days of the regular season.
