Arsenal vs Wigan Athletic predictions and betting tips – Quadruple dreams still on

Arsenal’s priority this season is to win the Premier League title, with Champions League glory a close second. The FA Cup is simply not as big a target for the Gunners.

However, Mikel Arteta is an ambitious manager and he no doubt believes Arsenal can compete on all four fronts this term. Can Wigan Athletic throw a spanner in the works?

Arsenal vs Wigan Athletic predictions

At one point on Sunday afternoon, Arsenal were sitting pretty. Having seen their side beat Sunderland a day earlier, Mikel Arteta and his staff were no doubt watching events at Anfield with interest.

After 83 minutes, Liverpool led Manchester City 1-0. The Reds had grown stronger in the second half and it looked like they would emerge victorious. Had they done so, Arsenal would have ended the weekend nine points clear at the top of the Premier League.

But City were not prepared to give up that easily. Bernardo Silva restored parity from an Erling Haaland flick-on, then Haaland himself converted a match-winning penalty in stoppage time. Just like that, Arsenal’s lead was down to six points.

For a few days at least. In the midweek round of fixtures, City played first. They duly took care of business, beating Fulham 3-0 thanks to three first-half goals. Arsenal’s advantage was trimmed to three.

It increased slightly again on Thursday, as Arteta’s team drew 1-1 with Brentford. Yet it was not a convincing display from the Gunners.

Arsenal looked nervy from the get-go. They made a few unforced errors and struggled to get their attacking players into the game.

A strong spell after half-time saw them take the lead, but Brentford equalised from a long throw and were the better team thereafter. Indeed, on the balance of play and chances created, the Bees were the better team on the night.

Arsenal’s lead now stands at four points, but they have the chance to extend that to seven against Wolverhampton Wanderers next Wednesday. At the moment, though, the momentum belongs to Manchester City.

Given the goings-on of recent days, Arsenal are probably happy enough to put their title bid on hold this weekend. Their attention now shifts back to the FA Cup, with Wigan Athletic the scheduled visitors to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

These two teams have not played each other since another FA Cup tie in 2013/14. That clash came at the semi-final stage, when Championship side Wigan (who were also the holders) pushed Arsenal all the way at Wembley.

The match finished 1-1 after extra time, before the Gunners held their nerve to triumph on penalties. Arteta, who played in that match, will be hoping for a more straightforward evening this time around.

Arsenal vs Wigan Athletic betting tips

Arsenal continue their quest for FA Cup glory against Wigan Athletic on Sunday night.

One-sided affair awaits

Arsenal were not at their best against Brentford, but they were facing a genuinely good team. The Gunners should find things much easier against Wigan Athletic.

The Latics are having a difficult time. After 20 games this term, they were 11th in League One and targeting a play-off place.

There has been little to celebrate since then. Wigan are now in the relegation zone and are yet to win a league match in 2026. They go into Sunday’s showdown with Arsenal on the back of four consecutive defeats.

Wigan will find it difficult to breach the Arsenal backline. And given they recently shipped six goals against Peterborough United, the Gunners should be able to score three times in this one.

Wigan keeper kept busy

Arteta is likely to shuffle his pack against Wigan Athletic, especially with that Wolves match having been brought forward from the weekend of the EFL Cup final.

That will not make much of a difference when you consider Arsenal’s second string would be good enough to challenge for Champions League qualification.

Indeed, if the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Ebere Eze and Gabriel Jesus are in the starting XI, Arsenal will still create plenty of chances against struggling League One opposition.

The Wigan goalkeeper Sam Tickle will need arms like Mr Tickle to keep Arsenal at bay. He should prepare for a busy evening.

Saka to take chance

In ordinary circumstances, Bukayo Saka would be wrapped up in cotton wool for a match like this.

However, the England international only played for a few minutes against Brentford having missed Arsenal’s three previous games through injury.

Arteta may want to get some more minutes under Saka’s belt ahead of the upcoming Premier League games against Wolves, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

Saka will not play for the full 90, but he will be a threat for as long as he is on the pitch.
