Anthony Gordon creates Champions League history – before being separated from teammate in bizarre exchange
Anthony Gordon made Champions League history during Newcastle’s thumping 6-1 win over Qarabag.
As well as scoring four times, Gordon had a brief argument with teammate Kieran Trippier at half time.

The Magpies raced to an incredible 5-0 lead in the first half, with Gordon netting his quad, including two penalties.
He grabbed all four in the space of 43 minutes to become just the second English player in Champions League history to score four goals in a game.
The only other player to do it is Harry Kane against Dinamo Zagreb.
But Gordon’s all came in one half, so he is the quickest to do it.
And in the Champions League goalscoring charts this season, the England international is second with nine goals, sitting just behind Kylian Mbappe.
The former Everton man is also Newcastle‘s record Champions League goalscorer, surpassing Alan Shearer.
However, after Gordon was brought down in the box by Mateusz Kochalski for his second penalty of the game, captain Kieran Trippier had a word with Gordon to give the penalty to someone else.
The 24-year-old had already scored his hat-trick, but as the club’s designated penalty taker, he decided to take it, and he scored it.
The half time whistle went soon after with Trippier and Gordon having to be kept apart.
Both players looked very frustrated with each other, with Joe Willock, Malick Thiaw and Joelinton stepping in to prevent the argument from turning physical.

Throwback
The argument between Trippier and Gordon brought back memories of the 2021/22 season when the latter was playing for Everton at St James’ Park.
After being heavily linked with a move to Tyneside, the Toffees took on the Magpies, and Gordon went down in the penalty area under a soft challenge from Dan Burn.
He was told in so uncertain circumstances by Trippier to get up, with the former Tottenham Hotspur man appearing to call Gordon a ‘stupid little t***’.
Fabian Schar then got involved, and Gordon backed off before joining the Magpies in January 2023.
So, though, this wasn’t quite like that, it did bring back some nostalgia.

Perfect night
Bar that little fight, it was an ideal night for Newcastle as they claimed a 6-1 win in the first leg of their Champions League play-off.
The Magpies made the 5,000 miles round trip to take on the Azebaijan side, who had beaten Benfica and drawn with Chelsea.
But they were no match for Eddie Howe’s men who scored after just three minutes as Gordon was played in behind by Dan Burn, and he finished into the bottom corner.
Thiaw made it 2-0 shortly after with a towering header from a Trippier cross.
It was 3-0 on 32 minutes as Newcastle were awarded a harsh penalty for handball, but Gordon stepped up and slammed his effort into the back of the net.
His hat-trick came following a terrible mistake at the back, and he waltzed through and drifted around the goalkeeper before scoring to grab a first Champions League hat-trick.

Then came the controversy as Trippier asked for Gordon to give it someone else, probably Nick Woltemade, but the England international took responsibility and found the back of the net again to make history.
Howe will be disappointed his team conceded as Elvin Jafarguilyev slammed one through Nick Pope, who will be disappointed he didn’t save the shot from an acute angle.
But there was still time for Newcastle to add some gloss to the scoreline as Jacob Murphy came off to the bench to score his first goal in the Champions League.
He cut inside and bent an effort that deflected into the back of the net, there were further chances for Harvey Barnes, Will Osula and Thiaw, but the night belonged to Gordon.
