AHL stint led to Scott Wedgewood-Mackenzie Blackwood Avalanche partnership

The Colorado Avalanche’s goaltending future looked bleak at the start of the 2024-25 season, until the new tandem of Mackenzie Blackwood and Scott Wedgewood hit the scene midway through the year. The tandem has taken Colorado by storm, taking control of the crease at different times to provide the Avalanche with a solid base for their high-flying offense. It was the long journey both took to get there that makes it all the more special, according to Ryan S. Clark via ESPN.

“But what they each encountered to reach the NHL couldn’t be hypothesized or projected. It had to be endured, and led them to going separate ways. They found success on the subsequent journeys, which led to them being reunited,” Clark stated.

Both goaltenders started in the New Jersey Devils organization before going seperate ways to build a career. In an ironic twist that might be a bit painful for the Devils, they eventually reunited with the Avalanche to form a tandem that New Jersey could’ve had. Hearing how both goaltenders feel about doing it together makes it even more heartbreaking for the Devils.

“I think what we’ve both found is you are walking on your path, but we can be side-by-side together,” Wedgewood said. “We do feel like we can be cheering each other on, and we don’t want each other to fail. Because then our team fails.”

Wedgewood earned the Game 1 start in the Stanley Cup Playoffs by winning four straight starts to end the season, allowing just two goals total. While it’ll be Wedgewood’s ball to run with until he fumbles it, the goaltender has less stress knowing that Blackwood sits behind him, ready to jump on the ball.
