4-star safety picks Ole Miss Rebels after decommitting from Michigan
Pete Golding and the Ole Miss Rebels pulled off an incredible pickup in the future secondary, earning the commitment of safety Darrell Mattison.
Mattison announced his commitment to the Rebels on Friday, per On3 insider Hayes Fawcett. Hailing from Chicago, Illinois, he originally committed to the Michigan Wolverines before reversing course to join the ranks in Oxford, Mississippi.
Mattison stands out as a four-star prospect with a 90 score on 247Sports. He ranks 11th among players in the state of Illinois, 23rd among safeties, and 244th in the entire class. His composite score of 0.8919 puts him at 14th, 37th and 410th in those respective categories.
“Wiry safety built for a center-field role with his range, physicality and ball skills. Lean and high-cut now, but has room to add bulk once lifting in college. Constantly puts himself in position to make plays with his active eyes and foot speed. Squares up targets in the open field and will roll the hips through contact. Can jump in front of passes, but also go get them in the deeper third with acrobatic leaps,” 247Sports’ Scouting Director Andrew Ivins wrote.
“Could improve as a man-to-man defender, but held his own in coverage at The Opening Indianapolis in advance of senior year. Likely to add plenty of special teams value given how he wranglers ball carriers to the ground. Projects as a potential impact player at the Power Four level that can clean up mistakes.”
Mattison showcased flashes throughout his junior campaign in high school. He finished the 2025 season with 47 tackles, five interceptions, three pass breakups, and one fumble recovery.
Ole Miss embraces the start of its new era, seeing Lane Kiffin controversially depart for the LSU Tigers before the 2025 season even ended. Pete Golding handles the head coaching title, anticipating a great year for his first full season as the program’s leader.
The Rebels are coming off a 13-2 record in 2025, reaching the semifinals of the College Football Playoff. They lost 31-27 to the Miami Hurricanes in a thrilling contest.
