2 Cubs pitchers get crucial injury updates before Rockies clash
The Chicago Cubs continue to attempt to compete despite no shortage of pitching injuries this season. The ball club recently received important updates on starting pitchers Justin Steele and Matthew Boyd. Steele is recovering from a left flexor strain while Boyd is battling a left meniscus injury. According to MLB.com, Boyd is expected to throw an up-down bullpen session on Tuesday and he should return at some point this month. As for Steele, the southpaw will continue a throwing program over the next three weeks and he is expected to return during the second half of the season.
Steele, 30, last appeared in an MLB game in 2025, but he made only four starts that season. The 2023 All-Star is hoping to make an impact during the second half of the 2026 campaign.
Boyd, a 35-year-old left-handed pitcher, turned in a 6.00 ERA across five starts this season before landing on the injure list. The 2025 All-Star should return fairly soon barring any setbacks.
Overall, the Cubs are 38-35 and in third place in the National League Central standings. It has unquestionably been an up and down season for the ball club, but they are still in contention. Chicago’s performance could improve once players begin returning from injury.
The Cubs are currently hosting the Colorado Rockies in a three-game series at Wrigley Field. On Monday, Chicago earned a 5-4 win to begin the series. Tuesday night’s game is scheduled for 8:05 PM EST as the Cubs look to clinch the series victory.
