$1.5bn NHL team announces $425m renovations to one of league’s most intimidating arenas amid complaints
The San Jose Sharks are doubling down on their future in Silicon Valley.
Following a flurry of social media teasers and a viral tweet detailing the scope of the project, the $1.5 billion franchise has officially launched Teal Reimagination.

It is a massive $425 million multi-year renovation project designed to transform the aging SAP Center into a state-of-the-art “literal shark tank.”
The announcement, which coincides with a lease extension keeping the team in downtown San Jose through at least 2051, represents one of the most significant private-public investments in the city’s history.
The SAP Center, affectionately known as “The Shark Tank,” has been the home of the Sharks since 1993.
While it remains one of the loudest venues in the NHL, the Teal Reimagination project aims to address long-standing fan complaints regarding congestion and aging infrastructure.
The core of the $425 million plan includes a significant expansion of the concourse footprint to eliminate the bottleneck effect during intermissions.
The team store’s footprint will also be tripled in size, allowing for a more immersive retail experience.
The massive renovation also includes the introduction of the “Legends Level,” featuring the First Line Lounge (with bar seating directly behind the goal) and the ultra-exclusive Cove Suites.
There will also be additional seating added in the lower bowl to bring more fans closer to the action.
Sharks President Jonathan Becher emphasized that this isn’t a mere renovation, but a complete rethinking of the fan experience.
“We want to make this a literal shark tank,” Becher said during the launch.

The Teal Reimagination website (TealReimagination.com) provides fans with a digital window into the future, featuring renderings that showcase a “shark-tank-like” exterior and outdoor concourse sections designed to take advantage of the California climate.
The project isn’t just about the aesthetics. A significant portion of the investment, jointly funded by the city and Sharks Sports & Entertainment, will also go toward invisible”upgrades such as plumbing, electrical, fire protection, and a revamped Wi-Fi network.
The timing of the renovation is critical.
As San Jose continues to evolve as a tech hub, the Sharks are positioning the SAP Center as the anchor of a revived downtown district.
With a roster currently headlined by young phenom Macklin Celebrini, the organization is ensuring that the team’s home is as high-potential as its talent on the ice.
Construction is expected to move in phases over the next several years to minimize disruption to the NHL schedule and the arena’s robust concert lineup.
For the fans who have braved the narrow hallways of the “Old Tank” for three decades, the message from the front office is clear: the future is teal, it’s spacious, and it’s staying in San Jose for a very long time.
