Year in and year out, the San Francisco 49ers play like Super Bowl contenders. However, injuries have regularly been their demise. The team certainly could have won Super Bowl 58 if the injury bug hadn’t bitten. Dre Greenlaw, the pride and soul of San Francisco’s defense, tore his achilles tendon in that game. That team has regularly been ravaged by injuries in the years since, too. Had the 49ers had better depth to cover for potential injuries, it is possible that their fortune in recent years could have been different.

After a 12-5 season, the 49ers got to work adding to the roster. They brought back Greenlaw after he spent a year with the Denver Broncos, and Osa Odighizuwa, Christian Kirk, and Mike Evans were added through the trade market or free agency. What had the potential to be a great offseason was stunted by an underwhelming performance in the 2026 NFL Draft. Now, the 49ers still have some holes on their roster that need to be addressed. The depth along the offensive line, in particular, is worrisome.

The team drafted Carver Willis and Enrique Cruz Jr., but they were taken in the fourth and fifth rounds, respectively, so they might not be ready to be relied upon right away. So, who could the 49ers sign in free agency?

The 49ers could sign Cam Robinson in free agency

The 49ers do have an elite tackle duo. Colton McKivitz is one of the best right tackles in the game, and Trent Williams is one of the best left tackles of this generation. However, the depth behind them is questionable, and the interior of the offensive line isn’t nearly as impressive.

Furthermore, Williams will be 38 years old next season, and he has played fewer than 16 games in every season but one since 2013. Williams did recently sign a $50 million extension, but the team will need to start thinking about the future, and they should have a reliable backup who can step up when Williams inevitably misses a few games.

Cam Robinson could be this player. Robinson has started 91 games over the course of his career. He is a streaky player at the left tackle position, but his highs would give the 49ers tons of confidence that he could protect Brock Purdy’s blind side when need be. Robinson has the versatility to kick inside to guard, though, so he could start in San Francisco’s interior and move outside when injuries require it.

At 335 pounds, Robinson is a mountain of a man. He is a mauler who thrives in the running game, and full-time guard duties may even further unlock him. Robinson’s occasional lapses wouldn’t be nearly as detrimental if he played guard, and Christian McCaffrey and Purdy would certainly love to have the big man in their offense.

Robinson shouldn’t cost much at this point in his career, and the fact that he is still available on the open market proves that. At worst, he’d provide depth for the 49ers’ offensive line and insurance for an aging superstar. At best, he could make a huge impact on San Francisco’s running game as a starter at guard and eventually replace Williams at tackle. The 49ers need to plan for the worst, as not doing so has cost them in recent years. Therefore, Robinson is the free agent still available that the team needs to sign.
