Wrexham suffer unwanted 77-year first as Ryan Reynolds watches promotion hopes take hit

Wrexham’s hopes of promotion to the Premier League took a hit on Tuesday night with a 2-1 defeat to Hull City.

And the Red Dragons had one of their Hollywood owners, Ryan Reynolds, watching on from the stands as they were beaten.

Following a hearty performance against Chelsea in the FA Cup, they headed back into Championship action with confidence.

However, goals from Joe Gelhardt and Lewis Koumas were enough for their promotion rivals Hull to come away with three points.

Nathan Broadhead got one back with 15 minutes to go for the hosts, but it wasn’t enough to save them in the end.

The loss meant that Wrexham missed the opportunity to go above the Tigers in the table into fifth place on goal difference.

Instead, they’re now six points behind them, sitting precariously in the last play-off spot with ten games to play.

And on top of the potentially costly defeat, Wrexham suffered an unwanted 77-year first on Tuesday.

Hull won their first meeting this season, beating the Welsh side 2-0 in December, and they’ve now completed the double over them.

Not since 1948/49 have the Tigers managed to do that in the league, with their second win ending the long wait.

Reynolds was spotted pre-match in the stands before going on to join fans in the home end at the Racecourse Ground.

But the Hollywood actor will not have been best pleased with the outcome on what could be a crucial night in the promotion race.

‘Put ourselves under pressure’

The loss to Hull was Wrexham’s first loss in five Championship games and their first since the start of February.

And manager Phil Parkinson said post-match: “First half we were disappointing, we made too many mistakes with the ball.

“We put ourselves under pressure… there was a lack of consistency and quality in our play, we gave a good team great opportunities.

“Second half we were loads better, happy with the lads for that.”

He added: “This was a huge game for us tonight and we’ve come out second best, we’ve got to admit that.

“But we go again on Friday [against Swansea City].”

Speaking on the upcoming clash with Snoop Dogg’s Swansea, Parkinson continued: “We’ve been on a good run, we’re still in the top six and other teams below us have got beat.

“So, we’ve just got to regroup, show resilience… we’ve had a few setbacks with injuries and suspension.

“We’ve known that we come out fighting when we get knocked back and that’s what we’ve got to do on Friday.”
