Canada will have been preparing for Friday night’s match for three years since it was announced they would co-hosting the World Cup for the very first time.

Jesse Marsch’s side take a strong unbeaten record into their opening game and have a stronger squad on paper than their opposite numbers.

USA are another team who have had the luxury of being able to prepare for their opening World Cup game in 2026 for three years, and will be roared on by their vociferous crowd in LA in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Managed by former Tottenham, Chelsea and PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino, the USA feel this summer will be their best chance at reaching the latter stages of the tournament for quite some time, having only reached the last eight twice in their history, and once (in 2002) since 1930.

The 24-year-old has been Pochettino’s side’s top scorer over the last 12 months, netting four goals in his last five starts for his country of birth, all of which against teams who have qualified for this summer’s World Cup, including the winner against Paraguay back in November.
