Wolves vs Liverpool predictions

After a painful loss away to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the midweek round of Premier League action, the last thing Liverpool need is another trip to Molineux on Friday.

It is fair to say the game between the two teams on Tuesday evening was a slow burner. But while the first half was forgettable, the second period contained more than its fair share of drama.

Wolves took the lead with their first shot of the game in the 78th minute, having been on the back foot almost constantly since the interval.

Mohamed Salah restored parity for Liverpool soon after, but Wolves were to have the last laugh when Andre’s deflected strike found the back of the net in stoppage time.

That win will not be enough to save Wolves from relegation, even though they also beat Aston Villa last week. Despite those two triumphs, Rob Edwards’s side are too far adrift of safety with just eight matches remaining.

As for Liverpool, defeat by the Premier League’s lowest-ranked team was a major blow to their chances of Champions League qualification.

At the time of writing they remain fifth in the standings, but a victory over Aston Villa on Wednesday would see Chelsea climb above them.

“My expectations have changed throughout the season,” Slot said after the 2-1 loss to Wolves.

“I expected more from us than where we are fighting from now. It’s another setback, we didn’t help ourselves with this result. There are eight games to play, we are coming closer and closer to the end.”

Qualifying for the 2026/27 Champions League is Liverpool’s priority in the weeks and months ahead, but Arne Slot will also be keen to go as far as possible in both the FA Cup and this season’s edition of Europe’s leading tournament.

Wolves are their opponents in the fifth round of the former competition, and after their exploits on Tuesday Edwards’s team will believe they can advance to the quarter-finals.

Slot is in a tricky position. If Liverpool were playing a lower-league side this weekend, he would probably shuffle his pack to give some key men the evening off.

As it is, the Reds boss cannot afford to make wholesale changes to his starting XI, but we could see Slot freshen things up in the final third after some stale attacking performances of late.

Wolves vs Liverpool betting tips

Wolves and Liverpool will go head-to-head in the fifth round of the FA Cup this weekend.

Liverpool to advance

Liverpool will be keen to avenge what they must feel was a smash-and-grab victory for Wolves last time out.

The Reds had the better of Tuesday’s encounter either side of half-time, yet that does not mean they played particularly well.

It is hard to envisage lightning striking twice, though, which is why we are leaning towards an away win.

However, Wolves showed in the Premier League clash that they are capable of making life difficult for Liverpool’s frontline.

We ultimately saw three goals in that match, but it was a tight game and there may well be fewer on this occasion.

Goals at one end

Wolves deserved credit for digging in on Tuesday, but it took them until the 78th minute to even land a shot on goal.

They have certainly looked more effective going forward of late, particularly in front of their own fans at Molineux.

At the same time, Liverpool have tightened up defensively in recent weeks and are giving up fewer chances than they were in the early part of the campaign.

A clean sheet is within reach for the Reds. This wager is especially tempting because it would pay out with a Wolves shut-out too.

Chiesa to get chance?

Liverpool scored five times against West Ham United last weekend, but three of those were from corners and one was an own goal.

The Reds then racked up an xG of 1.91 against Wolves, but that was from 19 shots. Not many of those attempts were clear-cut opportunities.

There is a decent chance Slot will mix things up in attack here, with Federico Chiesa and Rio Ngumoha pushing to start.

Ngumoha is likely to be the first cab off the rank given his promising cameo displays in recent matches. Do not be surprised if he makes his mark.
