What’s next for Ange Postecoglou after two Premier League sackings in three months

Steven Caulker has revealed that Ange Postecoglou is having a break following a brutal few months in the Premier League.

Despite guiding Tottenham Hotspur to the Europa League, the Australian was sacked with Spurs finishing the season in 17th place.

But he was soon back in management as he came to Nottingham Forest‘s rescue when they sacked Nuno Espirito Santo.

The ambition from Evangelos Marinakis was to win trophies, and Postecoglou’s record in cup competitions is excellent.

But he lasted just eight games, failing to win even once.

It was a bruising experience for Postecoglou, who was soon moved on, with Sean Dyche in to replace him, though, that isn’t going too well either.

One of Postecoglou’s assistants at Spurs and Forest was Nick Montgomery.

The Englishman is now back in management and has run into Caulker, who provided an update on Postecoglou on talkSPORT Breakfast.

Montgomery has a job with Chinese side BJ Guoan, and Caulker was asked by Shebahn Aherne how Postecoglou is doing.

He said: “I think he’s just taking a break right now.

“They went into Forest and there was the expectation as they walked into a club that was playing European football, and they were going to have time.

“But without being given that time, it didn’t work out.

“It hasn’t worked out for Nottingham Forest either because they are still struggling down the bottom of the league under Dyche.

“I think he’s taking a breather and seeing what is next.

“Nick Montgomery has taken a job over here in Asia.

“But on that, it is good to see British coaches going abroad. It is good to see them making a name for themselves.”

Time for reflection

It is now wonder that Postecoglou is taking a break from management.

Twenty twenty five was a strange year for the Australian in a lot of ways.

He ended the season at Spurs with them in 17th, though, they never were in a relegation battle.

But still 22 defeats across a 38-game season was not good enough in anyway.

The Europa League final win was top drawer, but it wasn’t enough for the Spurs board to keep him in charge.

But he wasn’t out of a job for long, with Forest appointing him in September.

Marinakis made it clear in the statement that the ambition was for Forest to become a team capable of challenging for trophies, and that Postecoglou was the man.

In the statement, Marinakis said: “We are bringing a coach to the Club who has a proven and consistent record of winning trophies.

“His experience of coaching teams at the highest level, along with his desire to build something special with us at Forest, makes him a fantastic person to help us on our journey and achieve consistently all our ambitions.

“After gaining promotion to the Premier League, then building consistently season after season to secure European football, we now must take the right step to compete with the very best and challenge for trophies.

“Ange has the credentials and the track-record to do this, and we are excited he is joining us on our ambitious journey.”

In the end, it was over after eight games, with Forest losing the last four.

It remains to be seen if this will be damaging for Postecoglou in the eyes of clubs, or if it will be overlooked.

It also remains to be seen if the Premier League is over for him as well.

It was certainly a mixed bag during his time in England’s top-flight.

But this is a guy who goes everywhere, so he’ll likely be ready for the next opportunity whenever it might arrive.
