What makes ‘all the sense in the world’ to Sean Payton about new 5-year contract

The Denver Broncos made sure to keep Sean Payton as head coach for the long haul, after giving him a new five-year contract on Thursday. Shortly after signing his new deal, keeping him locked in with the team through the 2030 season, Payton revealed why the extension was a no-brainer for him.

Payton, who is 62 years old, is ultimately happy with his new contract because it ties him together with Broncos general manager George Paton, according to Bobby Kownack of NFL.com. The former Super Bowl-winning head coach considers himself lucky, as he compared this situation in Denver with his time with the New Orleans Saints.

“I think it makes all the sense in the world,” said Payton about working with Paton through the 2030 season. “I’m super appreciative of that opportunity. I said this to you guys earlier, that triangle of ownership, the Walton-Penner group, Carrie and Greg, and then George, working with him, I’ve been spoiled.

“Because I had a real good experience in New Orleans with ownership and (Saints GM) Mickey (Loomis), and to go two for two with that is hard in our league,” continued Payton. “I’m thankful they want me back, and we’ll do everything we can to continue to keep winning.”

The Broncos have a great thing going from the top to the bottom. After the club came just shy of reaching Super Bowl LX, expectations are high moving forward. The ownership group clearly believes tying Sean Payton and George Paton together could eventually lead to a championship win.

Denver is wrapping up OTAs on Thursday. Payton will have a firmer grasp of his roster come June 16 when mandatory minicamp kicks off.
