West Ham make U-turn on Callum Wilson future amid January transfer enquiry from Premier League rival

Callum Wilson is set to stay at West Ham following his late winner at Tottenham, talkSPORT understands.

The 33-year-old was the Hammers‘ hero on Saturday as he came off the bench to fire home in the third minute of stoppage time to seal a crucial 2-1 victory.

Wilson, who has been a facing an uncertain future at the London Stadium, had only entered the pitch in the first of six added-on minutes.

But he was quickest to react to Ollie Scarles’ corner from a couple of yards out to boost West Ham’s survival chances.

While the east London outfit remain in 18th spot, they have cut the gap on 17th-placed Nottingham Forest from seven to five points.

And West Ham have also piled the pressure on Spurs boss Thomas Frank in the process with Tottenham languishing in 14th after a ninth Premier League defeat this term.

And the club are now set to keep Wilson beyond the winter transfer window despite heavy interest in the nine-cap England international.

Crystal Palace are among the clubs who have enquired about signing Wilson this month.

Celtic have also been keen on securing his services in Martin O’Neill’s quest to fire the Hoops to Scottish Premiership glory.

Meanwhile, Wilson also had Saudi interest from Al Ettifaq and Al Shabab.

The former Newcastle centre-forward had asked the Hammers to tear up his contract six months early after finding himself out of the team.

Speaking immediately after his volley against Spurs, Wilson hinted that he plans to stay after stating the result gives him hope he can help West Ham climb up the table over the coming months.

He told the club’s website: “There’s no better feeling than scoring a last-minute winner! I think that’s the experience – I know where the goal is, and thankfully it paid off today.”

Before adding: “We definitely want to build now.

“I think the [Emirates FA] Cup game [against Queens Park Rangers] came at a good time last weekend, and having got the result there, that gave us something to work from.

“We’ve had a big game in the league, and come away with the three points.

“So now we just need to keep doing what we’re doing, and hopefully we can start climbing that league.”

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo had remained coy over the player’s future when asked if Wilson would still be at West Ham when the window closes.

Wilson has been involved in six Premier League goals from 18 matches this term

He said: “I don’t have to say anything to Callum. He knows he has so much. I’m so happy for him. He gave us the winning goal, he means a lot.

“We are still in the market to bring players, we need to rebalance the squad. Rumours, rumours, rumours. We are doing things properly.

“Every player that is in the building, it’s up to us to count on them, support them, and they need to help us. They need to help the club.”

Only Jarrod Bowen has scored more goals than Wilson’s five for West Ham this term.

And he will be hoping to score in back-to-back matches for the second time this campaign when West Ham host Sunderland on Saturday.
