Transfer rumors: Marcus Rashford’s release clause cancelled for 2 Manchester United foes
While Manchester United attacker Marcus Rashford is away with the English national team at the 2026 World Cup, his club future continues to be a source of speculation. After Barcelona let their option to sign him expire, Rashford is slated to return to Manchester after the World Cup. Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano revealed via X, formerly Twitter, that Rashford’s £40m release clause is not valid for two of United’s biggest rivals: Manchester City and Liverpool.

He’s gonna assess all options, Man United too; including staying under Michael Carrick.

“Marcus Rashford’s £40m release clause is not valid for Man City and Liverpool — the final decision stands with the player,” reported Romano on Tuesday afternoon. “He’s gonna assess all options, Man United too, including staying under Michael Carrick.”
Carrick, recently promoted from the interim manager role, is entering his first summer transfer window in charge. After being hired in January to replace former coach Rubem Amorim (recently hired to become AC Milan’s new boss), Carrick didn’t have a say in Manchester United’s winter business. Now, as he looks to maintain the vastly improved form displayed by United during last season’s second half, he’ll need reinforcements.
Finding a way to either get Rashford back off the books, or back into Manchester United’s regular rotation, will be key. Last summer under Amorim, United spent almost 250 million euros to sign strikers Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha, along with winger Bryan Mbeumo, to remake their attack. The final addition was goaltender Senne Lammens, which was arguably the best addition of all. Now, Carrick needs to see if Rashford will be able to make his attack more potent. Or the more likely scenario: where will Rashford end up playing once the summer window draws to a close?
