Transfer notebook: Cristian Romero in potential five-man Tottenham exit, Andy Robertson replacement, Brighton fight to keep £50m star

Cristian Romero may have played his last game for Tottenham Hotspur, talkSPORT understands.

Romero will miss the rest of the season after leaving the field in tears with a knee injury sustained during Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Sunderland that plunged Spurs deeper into relegation turmoil.

Even if they stay up, Tottenham sources have confirmed the club are planning a radical overhaul of their squad this summer.

Captain Romero is one of their more sellable assets and has long-standing interest from Atletico Madrid.

The Argentine World Cup winner’s dad has claimed he has a release clause of around £60million in his contract.

Other likely departures include goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, Yves Bissouma and Destiny Udogie.

Meanwhile, it is now far from guaranteed Spurs will opt to sign on-loan Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich permanently.

Robertson replacement

RB Leipzig captain David Raum is emerging as a possible replacement for Andy Robertson at Liverpool.

The 27-year-old Germany international is understood to have caught the eye of the Merseysiders while they have been scouting Leipzig teammate Yan Diomande.

The reigning Premier League champions will be short of options at left-back when Robertson leaves on a free transfer at the end of the season.

While Kostas Tsimikas is expected to return from an underwhelming loan spell at Roma, the Greek international is likely to be shipped out – and that would leave Milos Kerkez with no obvious cover.

Raum is likely to be available at a cheaper price than another long-term Liverpool target, Fulham’s Antonee Robinson.

Farewell, Fabian?

Fabian Schar could follow Kieran Trippier out of the Newcastle exit door, ending his eight-year career at St James’ Park.

Schar is out of contract at the end of the season and sources have told talkSPORT it is far from guaranteed that he will be given a new deal.

The Swiss centre-back, popular with Magpies fans, has not played since January due to injury.

He suffered a recent setback in his bid to recover from an ankle issue, which meant his return to the pitch was delayed until May.

Schar also turns 35 later this year and is thus coming to the end of his career.

He has played more than 200 league games for Newcastle since joining from Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna in the summer of 2018.

One Hecke of a fight

Brighton are braced for a summer battle to keep defender Jan-Paul van Hecke at the club.

The 25-year-old has been one of the Seagulls’ standout performers this season, attracting admiring glances from the likes of Tottenham and Liverpool.

Newcastle have also shown interest in the Netherlands international in previous transfer windows.

Brighton signed Van Hecke from Dutch club NAC Breda for a bargain £2m six years ago.

If he were to be sold, the Seagulls would now expect to recoup at least £50m, given he has a contract until the end of next season.
