Tottenham Hotspur vs Newcastle United predictions
Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are not enjoying life right now. With Champions League qualification now unachievable, both clubs have had to reevaluate what success would mean this season.
Spurs and Newcastle remain in this year’s edition of Europe’s principal tournament. Thomas Frank’s team secured a direct passage to the round of 16 last month, while Eddie Howe’s men must go through the knockout phase play-offs.
That is where the positivity ends. After a 2-0 defeat by Manchester United on Saturday, Tottenham are just six points clear of the relegation zone. Demotion sounds unthinkable, but it should not be.
Newcastle’s position is not quite as precarious; with a 10-point buffer above the dreaded dotted line, it is hard to see them getting dragged in. But after dropping into the bottom half, there are very real fears that Newcastle will miss out on Europe entirely.
Eddie Howe appears to be feeling the pressure. His team were booed off after a 3-2 loss to Brentford at the weekend, with Howe accepting the response of the supporters.
“It is hard [to hear the jeers], but I don’t blame the supporters for expressing their feelings,” he said.
“I think we’ve created that ourselves, to a point, with a run of games where we haven’t played as well as we can and where we’ve defended poorly and got punished. They’re reacting to what we deliver.
“There’s a harsh reality for me. I’ve got to think long and hard, not about my effort because I can’t question that about myself, but I think I’ve got to work better, I’ve got to do more.”
It was an honest assessment from the former Bournemouth boss, and although the issues at Newcastle go beyond the manager, Howe must be worried that a failure to turn things around could bring his tenure at St James’ Park to an end.
Howe at least has credit in the bank at his current club. Over at Tottenham, Frank does not have much in the way of that.
Spurs held their own for the opening half an hour against Manchester United, but Cristian Romero’s red card made the rest of the match an uphill battle.
Frank’s men have now won just one of their last 10 games. They may still feel they are too good to go down, but many season ticket holders at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would beg to differ.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Newcastle United betting tips
Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United both need the points when they face off in north London.
Spurs can do job
It was hard to be too critical of Frank after Saturday’s defeat at Old Trafford.
Tottenham were at least Manchester United’s equals before Romero’s mindless foul on Casemiro. Had that not happened, Spurs could have got something.
A week earlier, Tottenham showed signs of life in a 2-2 draw with Manchester City. Squint hard enough and one or two silver linings become visible.
Spurs have been dismal at home this season, but Newcastle have been equally poor on their travels. Only the bottom two plus Leeds United have picked up fewer points at rival grounds.
Tottenham desperately need a victory, and while they are unlikely to play Newcastle off the park, we expect them to get it on Tuesday.

First goal vital
With both teams low on confidence, the first goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will probably be vital.
Spurs have consistently struggled against low defensive blocks on home turf, but Newcastle will take a bolder approach – and that could play into the hands of their opponents.
Newcastle United have scored the first goal 15 times this season, while Tottenham have broken the deadlock in 11 matches.
On this occasion, though, Spurs can get their noses in front.

Simons showing quality
After a difficult start to life in the Premier League, Xavi Simons has started to show his quality in recent weeks.
The former RB Leipzig man was particularly bright against Manchester City, driving Tottenham forward and helping them to get back in the game.
With James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski still on the treatment table, Simons is Spurs’ most natural source of creativity in the final third.
Now Simons must work on improving his numbers. For a player with his talent, one direct goal involvement in his last seven appearances is a poor return.
Simons can take a small step towards bettering his output against Newcastle United.
